The Udatsu Street

An ‘udatsu’ is a small side wall protruding from the building’s second floor.
At the time that udatsu were constructed, they were built for preventing fires, but in time they became a symbol of wealth on the merchant houses. It’s said that this is where the phrase ‘udatsu ga agaru’, or literally, ‘the udatsu are rising’, comes from. The meaning of the saying is that someone is doing well financially, as erecting udatsu on your house required quite a large sum of money.
